Diamer-Bhasha boundary dispute: Gilgit rejects K-P’s claim to part of dam

GILGIT: Existing tensions between Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) have increased over the controversy of the Diamer-Bhasha dam, with both sides claiming rights to the dam.

G-B legislative assembly members rejected K-P’s claim over part of the structure on Tuesday and decided to inform the federal government about “encroachment” through “proper channels”.

“K-P’s claim over some eight kilometres of land in Diamer is baseless and so, is rejected,” the lawmakers decided in an informal meeting chaired by the G-B legislative assembly speaker.

Members of the G-B assembly said that the K-P assembly had recently passed a resolution claiming land in Diamer. According to members, the K-P assembly also demanded equal compensation for the people of Kohistan likely to be affected by the construction of the proposed dam.

Speaker Wazir Baig formed a five-member committee belonging to lawmakers hailing from Diamer district to look into the matter, a lawmaker told The Express Tribune.

The main purpose of taking up the matter with the federal government and discussing it in a formal session of the G-B assembly was to avoid a direct confrontation with the K-P government.

Nationalist leader Nawaz Naji told the meeting in a controversial statement that historically, Kohistan, Shinaki and Chitral were also part of G-B and therefore, G-B could claim rights over these areas as well.

“If you love me, don’t use drugs”: Nawaz Naji appeals to the youth

PT Report

Gilgit, November 24: MLA Nawaz Naji, leader of the Balawaristan National Front, has said that youth of Ghizar are being provided easy access to drugs as part of a conspiracy. Despite of the fact that Opium is not harvested in Ghizar, lethal drugs are being supplied to the youth of Ghizar under the noses of law-enforcers, Naji said.

He has urged the workers of BNF to rise against the menace of drug addiction. “We will go to every single house of the district and appeal to the people to shun consumption of Charas and alcohol”, Naji has said.

Nawaz Khan Naji is Supreme Leader of his own faction of the Balawaristan National Front (BNF)

“If the youth of Ghizar love me, they shall not use drugs”, the nationalist leader drawing most of his support from youth said.

It is pertinent to note that in many parts of GB drugs, like Charas, Heroin, Alcohol and other unhealthy products are being consumed by a growingly large population of the youth. Some of the factor contributing to the trend are laxity of the forces, at best, and tacit approval and support of corrupt elements within the law-enforcing agencies, at worst.

Alcohol is either smuggled from China and other parts of Pakistan, or prepared locally. However, drugs are Charas and Heroin are not prepared locally, but smuggled to the region through KPK.

[Pictorial] Snowfall adds to the agony of remote communities

Life in the mountains becomes very difficult with the arrival of harsh winters. Many remote valleys remain covered under snow for months, with no outside access and without any local solutions to many basic needs, like health and access to fresh water. The situation is almost same in all border valleys, like Gultari, Darkut, Misgar, Shimshal, parts of Kharmang, parts of Gupis and the the Chilm and Dashkin valleys of Astore.

In this pictorial, we present selected photographs shared by Karim Khan Fayyazi, a citizen reporter, who recently visited the Ziarat area in Chipursan region of Gojal Valley, upper Hunza. The photographs reflect the region’s beauty, at one hand, but the stories of risk, vulnerabilities and difficulties at the other.
