Gilgit, December 8: The Internally Displaced People of Attabad and Gojal Valley who are living at relief camps and with host families are shocked to get loan-recovery notices from the Zarai Taraqiati Bank Ltd. (ZTBL).
The notices have been served to the Attabad IDPs in the relief camps.
According to bank sources the government has still not sent any notification regarding loan waivers for the calamity hit region.
It is pertinent to note that the entire Gojal Valley, Attabad and Sarat Village of Central Hunza, were declared calamity hit by the former acting Governor, Qamar Zaman Kaira and a notification of the calamity hit status had also been issued.
It is ironic that while industrialists and feudal landlords across Pakistan have been able to waive off loans amounting to tens of billions of rupees, the IDPs of Hunza Valley are being served notices for loan recovery. It seems that the “strongest display” of the government’s power is manifested while dealing with weakest segments of the society.
The pressuring tactics used by the said bank and the government’s shameless refusal to resolve issues of the calamity hit population are being seen as a symptom of the state’s inability to ensure respect for human rights in the Gilgit – Baltisatn region.
